How to use the Gazette website

Whether you’re submitting a vacancy or searching articles for professional learning, here’s how to get the most out of the Education Gazette website

The Education Gazette website got a fresh new look this year. We also brought in some important changes, notably to how vacancies are listed.
In the print version, listings are now abbreviated to the name of the organisation offering the job and the job title. Full listings are found on the website only. This change saves a great deal of paper and recognises that the website is a primary source of vacancy information for education job-seekers.
We’d thought it would help readers to run through how you can get the most from using the Education Gazette website: www.edgazette.govt.nz
Finding your way around
On the home page, the blue box in the centre lets you search for vacancies. Below the box are a selection of the latest articles. Beneath the Education Gazette logo at the page top are important links, taking you to full lists of vacancies, notices and articles. ‘Search’ links to options for searching all these. To submit a vacancy or notice click on ‘submissions’, also at the top.
Hit the green button ‘subscribe now’ and you’ll find a range of options for getting the latest information emailed direct to you.
At any stage you can return to the home page by clicking on the Education Gazette logo, or the word ‘Home’ at page bottom.
Publishing dates, rate cards and more
Other important links are at the bottom of every page. Click on ‘About’ and you are taken to a page with useful information such as publishing dates for the Education Gazette magazine. Also on the ‘About’ page are term dates and a rate card for advertisers. A link to our contact details is also on the bottom of each page.
Searching
Vacancies
When you search for vacancies you can enter a category or region to narrow the results. If you want to be be even more specific, enter a key word or two into the box provided. Type ‘chemistry’ and you’ll get all the listings for chemistry teachers.
Professional development
The search page for PD notices also lets you drill down to what you want. It has a range of categories – region, audience, date and topic. As you make a selection under each category, the page updates itself, progressively showing fewer results as you get specific.
Notices
Keywords help you look through our archive of notices. You can also search by category and date.
 Submitting vacancies
Take note of the page for submitting vacancies: www.edgazette.govt.nz/vacancies/create.aspx. It has separate fields for the job titles which appear in the print magazine, and the full description which appears online. Please stick to the word limit: 55 words in most cases, 70 for listings in Māori and tagged positions at integrated schools. You can tick a box to pay for a full listing to appear in print.
Then click on ‘preview vacancy’ and a new screen shows your listing. You can still edit it at this stage. Finally, enter the words you can see in our anti-spam box and hit ‘list vacancy’.
Your listing is not automatically published. Instead, our team edit and proofread it, ensuring it is under the word limit and fits our style. Listings are then put online within two working days.

Submitting notices
On the submissions page, you’ll find options for posting a notice, or a professional development notice. These both have a similar process to listing a vacancy. Look out for the detailed guide to professional development notices. Length is limited to 70 words per item, 100 in Māori.
Get updates via email
Want handy features of the Gazette to appear in your inbox? Hit the green button in the top right corner that says “Subscribe now”.
You’ll find three options. You can get the latest Gazette article by email, normally every two weeks. You can get daily new vacancy alerts that match your search criteria, and you can be alerted when professional development notices match your criteria.
Archived stories – a resource for professional learning
Click on ‘articles’ at page top and you’ll see the latest features and regular updates from the magazine. There’s also a search function based on entering keywords or dates.
The last 12 year’s worth of articles are archived so there’s plenty to read on topics of professional interest.
Entering a word like “curriculum” generates a very long list of stories – it’s been a popular topic. Try being more specific. You can combine search terms with a timeframe from the drop-down list, eg “Volume 99 2009” to search all articles last year on your topic of choice.
Enter “Principal Alert” or “Board Alert”as keywords and an edition date to find previous issues of these popular newsletters.
The Ministry of Education’s ECE Update, leadership articles, Q&A National Standards and NZQA News all appear on this page.

From the Ministry
You will have noticed lots of changes to the Education Gazette lately. These make it easier for the sector to know what’s going on.
In the past the Ministry sent you lots of information by mail. Now we use the Gazette as our primary way to communicate – it puts everything in one place and goes out every fortnight. We’ve renamed Principal and Board View to Alert to show the importance of these pages. That is where you’ll find must read information, along with the Official Notices.
We’re working on connecting the Gazette more to the Ministry websites – so we’ll let you know what new information is available and where to get it. At the same time we’ll start putting the Official Notices on the Ministry website.
We hope you’ve noticed a difference and that these changes make it easier for you to keep up-to-date with our sector.
We welcome suggestions and feedback:
